Over the past three months, port congestion in the containership trades and demurrage in the dry bulk market have become mainstream news. During this time, the maritime tech landscape has seen several M&A transactions and further venture investment in new startups and established players.
Highlights of the October 2021 Skysail Maritime Technology Landscape:
The Intelligence & Analytics category saw a flurry of M&A activity, led by Spire's announced acquisition of rival exactEarth, Veson Nautical's acquisition of Oceanbolt and Kpler's acquisition of ClipperData. These transactions further strengthen the data, analytics and intelligence capabilities of these three market leaders in their respective segments, enabling them to broaden their product portfolios and grow market share.
In the Vessel Management category, ZeroNorth acquired Propulsion Dynamics, boosting ZeroNorth revenue by 15% and deepening the capabilities of their solutions with Propulsion Dynamics' experience from more than 25,000 vessel fuel consumption models. Meanwhile Italian classification society RINA acquired Sertica, in line with its strategic plans to expand its digital offerings and improve market positioning in terms of geographic proximity to its customer base.
On the VC front, SEDNA secured $34 million in Series B funding to expand into new markets in the supply chain space.
